Retro Game Review: World of Illusion

WoI

It’s only right that I start off with the first game I got given when I started recollecting for the Sega Mega Drive, and that is World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck was published by Sega and was released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis on 19 December 1992 (EU release).

I have played this game in both single player and 2 player mode and have differing views depending on how you play it. I found playing on my own fairly tedious and not as enjoyable as 2 player and therefore my review will be based on the multiplayer action!

The game starts with Mickey and Donald preparing to do a magic trick, where they discover a magical box. However, this box is actually a trap set by the evil Pete, and our heroes are sent into another dimension, where they must find a way home.

As 2 players, one must take over as Mickey and one as Donald, and help each other to get through each of the levels. The playing cards in the top corner represent your health, once these run out you lose a life which are shared between the two characters. As you go through the levels you are met with different challenges in the way of enemies, which turn into doves if you attack them with your cape, obstacles, where you must stand on each other to reach or Mickey has to pull Donald through, as his bum is too big to fit in some gaps! On the way you will be able to pick up extra health, lives and points, that you can fight over with your co-player.

Everytime you reach the end of a level, you met a boss. Once they are defeated, a new magic spell is learnt, which will help you when taking on the next level. You will also receive a password to get back to this level next time, which will consist of different playing cards which are heroes are on.

WoI 2

Overall, I found this game very enjoyable when played with someone else. With the multiplayer, you are required to work together in order to traverse the levels whereas the single player experience will change depending on what character you choose. I would highly recommend this game to a gamer that enjoys the other Mickey titles (Castle of Illusion, Fantasia etc) but only if you have someone else to enjoy with.

Game Rating: 4/5.

(This is my first game review post, so if there is any suggestions that you have please let me know. I plan to make these a regular thing so any feedback will definitely taken on board!)

    1. Yeah definitely. Levels were different and everything. The fun factor comes in more when playing as two. As you had to chase each other for bonuses and helping each other out etc.
P.s. you may like the modern game review I’m hoping to write up tomorrow. 😊

      1. Sounds similar to the playing style of the Lego Games now-a-days! Which is a very good thing!
That is creative to have it as a slightly different set up levels for co-op. Wish I could play it with my sister now. XD

And yes! I shall happily wait for it.
